This wonderful palace, a set edifices,  was the refined royal residence of the Gonzaga Family. It houses several works, like the masterpieces of Rubens and the splendid frescoes of the Camera degli Sposi (The Wedding Chamber) by Andrea Mantegna.The Gonzaga dynasty owned and lived in the Palace from 1328 till 1707, when the dynasty estingueshed. The Palace’s was originally composed of two disjointed parts: by the end of XIII century one of the two parts belonged to the Buonacolsi, the rival family. In 1328, the year when Lugi Gonzaga defeated his rival family, some of the sections of the palace, forming the Old Court, were already existing. Among them are the Magna Domus and the Captain’s Palace on Piazza Sordello. The Gonzaga Palace was finished at the beginning of XVII century.During the half of XVI century all the sections were connected, creating, thus, one greandiose complex occupying 35.000 sm. with gardens and buildings. It was situated in the nort-west part of the city.When Austria conquered the Ducato of Mantova, some parts of the Palace became the Austrian headquarters. From this period on, not much attention was being paied to the Palace. Only since 1900 important restorations were made on it, and, today, it is considered as one of the most important museums of Italy.
