Cecilia Metella was the wife of  Licinio Crasso, son of the Triunviro who, together with Cesare and Pompeo, ended the Roman Republic in favor of imperialism. Her grave dates back to the I century b.C. and is located at the third km of the suggestive Appia Antica. It is shaped like an imposing cylindric tower built on a square base. During the Middle Age, fortifications were built around the tower. The building looks like ancient Italic barrows and its shape will inspire the style of the Augustan Mausoleum. The top of the tower is adorned with bull skulls, a decoration often found in Roman funerary monuments.
