Palazzo Massimo represents one of the four facilities housing the National Museum of Rome. The other three are Baths of Diocletian, Palazzo Altemps and Crypta Balbi. Palazzo Massimo plays a central role inside the National Museum. Its four floors display a collection of art unique in the world, thanks to the refinement and exclusivity of the pieces exposed: collection of sculptures and portraits (Busto di Antonino Pio, the famous Discobolo Lancellotti, Venus and Doidalsas); the collection of frescoes and mosaics from Roman Villas (Cubicula Leucotea, Villa di Livia); the precious collection of coins and goldsmith, jewels and gems of funerary art. Among them the one of the Bambina di Grottarossa (Child of Grottarossa) deserves our attention: the baby girl was found mummified together with her doll and is in exposition in the basement halls. The building was founded during the second half of 1800 by order of Duke Mario Massimo di Rignano. It is in neo renaissance style and it is located on an area previously occupied by a 1500 building housing a college. In 1990 it became the premises of the National Museum.
