Diocleziano Baths complex represents one of the four premises of the National Roman Museum. The other three are: Massimo alle Terme Palace, Altemps Palace, Baldi’s Crypt.Diocleziano Baths, founded between 298 and 306 a.C., was a colossal thermal complex of the late imperial period. It covered an area of more than 13.000 square mt. Today it is the headquarter of the National Roman Museum (founded in 1898), and its archaeological exhibition is among the richest in the world, displaying both finds from other collections and objects discovered in the Baths’area.Inside the Michelangelo’s thermal complex is situated the church St. Maria degli Angeli, ordered by Pope Pio IV in 1561. In its cloister, planned by Michelangelo, are displayed more than 400 sculptures of different kinds, belonging to the Roman period: architectural finds, marble groups and statues, sarcophagi and altars for offerings.Diocleziano Baths were planned to introduce to the origins of the history of Rome; for this reason they house a wide epigraphic section illustrating the birth of Latin language by means of texts written various supports dating from VIII century b.C. to IV century a.C.. Afrodite di Cirene, the statue which is thought to represent the Hellenic Prince (II century b.C.), made of golden plated bronze and the Pugilatore Seduto (Sitting Boxer) dating I century b.C.,are some of the most important pieces there exposed.
