The Villa Borghese was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese, grandson of Pope Paolo V, who assigned the project to F. Ponzio and G. Vasanzio in the year 1613. Famous artists of the seventieth century participated in the decorations of the internal parts and the ceiling of the Loggia, executed by G. Lanfranco. During the Napoleonic period, some aesthetic changes were made, giving the building a more sober and neoclassic style. Cardinal Borghese, who was an authentic patron and client, moved the collection of works of his contemporary artists into the Villa. Among his contemporaries were: Caravaggio, Rubens, G. L. Bernini, G. Reni. He became, thus, one of the most famous personalities in the field of art. The ground floor of the Villa houses the collection of the marble groups, among them, the superb works by Bernini stand out: David (1623-24), Apollo and Dafne (1622-25), Plutone and Proserpina (1621-22), Enea and Anchise (1618-20). The works of Antonio Canova are part of the collection too:  among them is the very famous Paolina Borghese (1805-08). On the first floor is located the exhibition of the paintings, many of which are considered real masterpieces.
