Palatine Museum was set up in the convent built in 1868 by the nouns of the Visitation, located on the top of the Palatine hill, one of the seven hills of Rome.It was decided, then, that in these premises there were to be kept the collections of important topographical documents, regarding the history of the hill and its monuments. The complex was restored by the end of the sixties and re-planned with a new route. In the new halls of the museum, artifacts dating from the prehistory of the hill to the fourth century a.C. are displayed.Augusto founded his abode on the Palatine hill and here he also erected the Temple of Vesta and the imposing Temple of Apollo. Under the reign of Tiberio the building of the magnificent palace on the Palatine hill (that gives the name to the palace) began: the palace was to become the imperial residence. It was a large complex that comprised residential areas with perystiles, gardens and wide representation halls, adorned with plants and moved by apses, niches in the walls and vault coverages.Under the reign of Domiziano, a grandiose town-planning scheme began and, with architect Rabirio, the building of the Imperial Palace was finally accomplished. The Palace grouped four bodies among which the domus Flavia, the domus Augustana, the stadium (or hippodrome) and the thermal baths. Impressive ruins of the prospect and the arcades degrading on the Circus Maximus are the remains of the complex.
